In our Windows Operating System, there are several applications which run in the background and access the internet and drain our valuable data. Some of them are mandatory like antivirus updates, OS updates, and other necessary installations but, all of them are not mandatory. In this article, I have portrayed how to block a program in the firewall from accessing the internet, a typical windows guide.
So, how can you conquer those glitches? The only possible way is to identify those purposeless applications and stop them from accessing the internet in the background. But, how? This article will guide you in detail on how to block a program in the firewall from accessing the internet.
You merely need to buy a software to achieve your goal. If you are a Windows Vista/7/8/10 user, your Windows Firewall is capable to fix this glitch pretty well. However, this is unfortunate for Windows XP users, it’s firewall is not accustomed to this feature. This feature was introduced from Windows Vista and continued to its later versions.
Open the Firewall Settings in Windows
To open the Firewall settings in Windows 8, point your mouse pointer to the upper-right corner of the screen and move the mouse pointer down and then, click on Search. Type Firewall in the Search bar and hit the enter key. You will be provided with a list of results. Select Windows Firewall from the list. You can also select Windows Firewall from settings.
There is another method for opening the Firewall settings. Press “Windows Logo Key+R” from your keyboard, to open the Run box. Type firewall.cpl and press OK to open the Windows Firewall settings page. The second method applies on all Windows versions.
Block the program
After opening the Firewall settings page, you will find a link with the name ” Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall” or ” Allow a program through Windows Firewall ” at the left side panel. Click on that link and you will be redirected to the next page.
There you will find an application list and check boxes next to each of them with a network distinction of “Home/Work (Private)” or “Public” network. To be able to change the settings, you have to click on the “Change settings” button on the upper right side of the window. You may be asked for a password, if so, give it right there.
Now, you are allowed to block any certain program from internet access. Just click on any program and uncheck all the checkboxes in that row to block it completely. You can also block a program from accessing the internet while connected on a private network, but unblock it while connected on a public network or vice versa by checking and unchecking the appropriate boxes right to the program listing. To save the changes you made in your Windows Firewall settings, click on the “OK” button located just below the program list.
The above article clearly describes the procedure of blocking some programs from internet access. However, remember, you need to be cautious while checking the boxes, as it will grant the program internet access. Checking a wrong program or unchecking a useful program, in both cases the scenario may be devastating. Use it wisely to take the full advantage of this feature.
